In May, Results Canada was thrilled to be part of the Vancouver Regional Construction Association’s (VRCA) 2017 Construction Leadership Forum in Whistler. Designed for middle managers, the conference addressed current issues, trends and best practices, and equipped delegates with tools to become well rounded industry leaders.
There were over 180 delegates in attendance who enjoyed a strong speaker line up, including a keynote from John Furlong, CEO of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. He discussed stories that lead to the staging of the games, leadership challenges they faced, and touched on the values that played a key role in the success of the games. He inspired delegates to develop a more humble, human, raw, and emotional approach to leadership.
Results Canada CEO, Tim O’Connor, delivered a compelling and interactive workshop entitled, “Communication is Key: What’s your style?”. Tim’s talk included an entertaining story about how people approach an elevator ride based on their particular DISC personality profile. It was very enlightening and fun to hear people referring to his talk as they rode the elevator afterward. Tim also discussed the key elements to conducting a Critical Conversation and how to apply these at work. W.I.S.E. is a simple framework for successfully conducting critical conversations:
Also in attendance was our Vancouver Practice Director, Clifton Kanto. When asked about his experience at the conference, Kanto was reminded of this quote by Robin Sharma…”Leadership is not about a title or a designation. It’s about impact, influence, and inspiration. Impact involves getting results, influence is about spreading the passion you have for your work, and you have to inspire team-mates and customers.” The atmosphere at the VRCA 2017 Leadership Conference flourished with a desire to lead with impact, influence, and inspiration. Kanto was also grateful to win a Fitbit Charge 2 as a prize in the Twitter Contest.
Overall, it was a very well organized event in a terrific venue with an enthusiastic audience and Results Canada looks forward to participating again next year!
